¿What is RFID?
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader.
Components of a RFID system
Its components are: RFID tags, RFID readers and software for data processing.
- Transponder or Tags are the heart of an RFID system, because they store the information that describes the object being
tracked. Specific object information is stored in the memory of tags and is accessed via the radio signal of
RFID readers. Tags may be active or passive and read-only, write-once, or read-write.
- RFID readers are devices that convert radio waves from RFID tags into a form that can be passed to
middleware software. An RFID tag reader uses antennas to communicate with the RFID chip. Reader
requirements vary depending on the type of task and application, and almost all applications will require
multiple forms of readers to make a successful system.
- Middleware software or applications are needed to manage the flow of data from readers and send the data to back-end management systems. RFID middleware assist with the following: Retrieving data from readers; Filtering data feeds to application software; Generating inventory movement notifications; Monitoring tag and reader network performance; Capturing history; Analyzing tag-read events for application tuning and optimization.
Applications of RFID
RFID is becoming increasingly prevalent as the price of the technology decreases. RFID tags are often a replacement for UPC or EAN barcodes, having a number of important advantages over the older barcode technology. RFID tags are being used in passports issued by many countries. Implantable RFID tags or transponders can be used for animal identification. An advanced automatic identification technology such as the Auto-ID system based on the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has significant value for inventory systems.
